Boston’s Downtown Movie Palaces, Massachusetts, Images of America, Paperback
Boston’s Downtown Movie Palaces, Massachusetts, Images of America, Paperback Since the late 1800s, Boston has been a trendsetter in the development of the movie business. It was here that many of the earliest public showings of moving images took place and the name nickelodeon first appeared on a storefront theater. In 1896, B.F. Keith added film to his Washington Street theater, then throughout his national chain of vaudeville houses. In 1914, Boston’s Modern became the country’s first theater with an installed sound projection system. Several years later, the city had its first movie palace: Marcus Loew’s Orpheum. A magnet for theater architects, Boston became a center for elegant movie houses, including the Metropolitan, Keith Memorial, and Paramount. Thanks to civic leaders and academic institutions, many of Boston’s theaters have been preserved and restored and are alive and well today.

Boston in the Golden Age of Spiritualism, Massachusetts, Paperback
Boston in the Golden Age of Spiritualism, Massachusetts, Paperback Spiritualism flourished in Boston from the first rumblings of the Civil War until the early twentieth century. Numerous clairvoyants claimed to bring messages from beyond the grave at seances and public meetings. Motives for belief were varied. Wealthy John Wetherbee sought business advice through supernatural means. Psychic Fannie Conant attributed her restored health to spirit intervention. Grieving theater manager Isaac B. Rich wanted to contact his deceased wife. While many earnestly believed in the movement, there were those who took advantage of naive Bostonians. Determined to expose charlatans, world-renowned magician Harry Houdini declared the famous medium and Bostonian Mina Margery” Crandon a fake. Join author Dee Morris as she navigates the complex history of Boston’s spiritualist movement.”

Boston, Massachusetts, Images of America, Paperback
Boston, Massachusetts, Images of America, Paperback On March 4, 1822, the townsfolk of Boston voted to incorporate their town as the City of Boston. A great change had just taken place, but even greater changes were to come during the ensuing century, as Boston’s population grew from 50,000 to 750,000 by 1922 and as it developed from a colonial town into the “Hub of the Universe.” Boston: A Century of Progress brings to life one hundred amazing years, from 1822 to 1922. More than two hundred fascinating images are combined with compelling text to take us on a mesmerizing journey back into our past and bring us face to face with the people, places, and events which shaped Boston’s destiny. Through these images we explore neighborhoods ranging from the North End to Downtown, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, and Fenway. We see landmarks and buildings both familiar and long-gone–schools, churches, mansions, stores, tenements, and parks. We meet not only the movers and shakers but also the ordinary people who lived, worked, and played in Victorian Boston, including the vast numbers of immigrants (by 1850, half of all Bostonians were foreign-born).

Filipinos in Greater Boston, Massachusetts, Images of America, Paperback
Filipinos in Greater Boston, Massachusetts, Images of America, Paperback As early as the Civil War, a dozen Filipino men living in Massachusetts enlisted in the Union army. In the 1900s, Filipino pensionados studied at Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and other colleges. After the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, Filipino medical, military, and other professionals settled in and around Greater Boston in Cambridge, Lexington, Malden, and Quincy. To support their communities, Filipino immigrants founded civic organizations such as the Philippine Medical Association of New England, Philipino-American Association of New England, and Philippine Nurses Association of New England. Since 1976, parents have been volunteering at Iskwelahang Pilipino (Filipino school) to encourage their American-born children’s pride for Filipino traditions. Included are never before seen photographs of the Aquino family during their time in exile. This book highlights the rich histories of Filipinos in Greater Boston and aims to inspire more works that document our immigrant community that has grown in the early 21st century to over 25,000 people.
